Dale Newman was born and raised in Indiana, U.S.A.
After school, Dale got a job working as a roadie and general laborer
for Mike Rutherford and the band Genesis. He toured with them and
Mike and The Mechanics for several years, working on a crew of four
to six people in charge of moving, at speed, a high profile band,
their instruments and all their gear. Some tours and records later,
he eventually moved to England to become more involved with the band,
particularly in the writing and rehearsal sessions leading to the
recording of the music. That had always been Dale's first interest,
in fact. Eventually Dale was asked to search for a property within
a certain area in the countryside of Surrey where the band could build
a studio. Over 400 sets of property details and countless viewings
(right at his breaking point!) Dale found Fisher Lane Farm. At this
point four of the road crew, including Dale, became happy slaves to
the studio owned by Genesis. Even though the bands haven't toured
in a while, Dale still has a very full time job with his usual duties
at The Farm and assisting Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.
Being around very talented people has had it's advantages, especially
when Dale's own interests are so similar. He writes, plays and records music in his
own small studio at the Farm that he calls "The Scrapyard" whenever he gets a spare minute. He has
released two albums with a third in progress. In his own words; "I have a very fulltime job with the
band, so my stuff is done as and when time allows. I rarely get more than an hour or two at a time, but it is a great
way to work because the Scrapyard is always there waiting for me at 6:00 o'clock. I'm not in a
hurry any more and I get better ideas if they are spontaneous. I use the computer to record the keys and drums, and a
Korg D16 to record all the audio (voices and guitar). The beauty of this is that if I go into the
studio and get even a tiny idea it goes straight into the machine and then I can slowly build it up into a song. The D16 has
brought me back to guitar, my natural instrument."
Dale is married to a wonderful lady. She works at a veterinary clinic
and is very dedicated to helping our furrier friends when she's not busy being a mom. They
have two very talented children.
Dale and I are in the process of writing a much better
page about him; his beginnings, how he got involved in music, where he went to school,
his involvement with Genesis, his family and all the really important information any fan should know.
Until we get it finished, below are some interesting statistics about
Dale:
